Dr. Joseph M. Youssef is a board-certified, fellowship-trained general and bariatric surgeon at Samaritan Surgical Specialists. He specializes in robotic and minimally invasive surgery, with particular expertise in weight-loss (bariatric/metabolic) surgery, foregut surgery, and general surgery.

Dr. Youssef completed his general surgery residency at Hackensack University Medical Center Palisades, followed by an advanced fellowship in Minimally Invasive, Foregut, and Bariatric Surgery at Case Western Reserve University / University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. He earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine and holds a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, with a concentration in tissue engineering, from Columbia University.

Committed to education and surgical training, Dr. Youssef serves as adjunct faculty at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and as an adjunct clinical instructor at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he continues to teach and mentor medical students and residents. He was honored as the Lenox Hill Attending of the Year (2025) for excellence in resident education and mentorship, and has been recognized throughout his career for compassionate, patient-centered care — including the Nursing Partnership Award for Compassion and induction into the Gold Humanism Honor Society.

Dr. Youssef is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and a Fellow of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (FASMBS), and an active member of SAGES. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and national presentations on sleeve gastrectomy, foregut surgery, and surgical innovation. He is fluent in English and Arabic.

Dr. Youssef has contributed to peer-reviewed research and national surgical meetings, including a lead publication in Surgical Endoscopy on sleeve gastrectomy morphology and long-term weight-loss and GERD outcomes, and a chapter in The SAGES Manual of Quality, Outcomes, and Patient Safety. He developed the Mujjahid-Youssef (MY) Hitch, an innovative atraumatic bowel-retraction technique presented at the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery Annual Meeting.
